Your MS Diagnosis
If you think you may have multiple sclerosis, you may want to ask your primary care physician for a referral to a neurologist. Neurologists specialize in diseases of the brain and central nervous system. Seeing a neurologist may help you avoid waiting a long time and seeing many healthcare providers before receiving a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. You may want to make sure you see a neurologist who has experience treating multiple sclerosis.
Your first neurology appointment will probably take a long time. Be patient. The neurologist wants to learn as much as possible about your symptoms and health in order to rule out other possible conditions.
Below are tips for getting the most from of your neurologist visit.
- Make the appointment for a day when you have plenty of time to spend with the neurologist. You don't want to feel rushed or try to hurry through the appointment. Be patient so you can make sure all of your concerns are covered.
- Write down your symptoms, noting when they occurred and how long they lasted. Be as specific as possible. Download a printable symptom list here

- Take notes. In addition to helping you remember what you were told reviewing the notes later can help spur additional questions. Download a printable notes page here.
- Ask the neurologist to repeat or explain anything you don't understand. Your neurologist wants you to understand what you're being told. So don't be shy about asking for clarification.
- Ask the nurse. If the neurologist is rushed along to another appointment, and you have additional concerns or questions, ask to speak with a nurse. Often, the nurse can answer many of your questions and have the neurologist answer any other questions at later time.
Call back if you have more questions. The nurse may take need to take a message and return your call in a day or two, but don't let this stop you from following up if you need more information.
