Taking AVONEX

If you are just starting AVONEX treatment or injecting for the first time, it's normal to feel nervous. We recommend that you talk to your healthcare provider. You can also read and download the step-by-step instructions in the AVONEX Injection Guide as well as seek professional training.

Even if you have experience taking subcutaneous injections, it is still important for you to receive proper training with AVONEX, since there are differences between giving yourself intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.

If you have not done so already, take a hands-on training session with a nurse. He or she will help you with your first injection to make it as comfortable as possible. AVONEX Services offers free injection training for you or a care partner. Call 1.800.456.2255 to arrange a free training session with one of our nurses. Your healthcare provider can also contact us to arrange training for you.

There are many reasons people who use AVONEX may find it easier to stay with and, in fact, stay with it longer. One important reason may be that a treatment that you take less frequently may be more convenient and may be easier to continue over time.

AVONEX is the only multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment that is delivered by an injection into the muscle (IM) instead of under the skin (subcutaneous). In clinical studies, only 3 out of 100 people taking AVONEX reported injection-site reactions often seen with other MS therapies.

AVONEX is available in two forms for your convenience: powder that must be mixed before injection and a prefilled syringe. Talk with your healthcare provider about the best option for you.

For step-by-step instructions on how to use AVONEX injections, download the AVONEX Injection Guide (PDF Format). These tips on managing injections may help, too.
